“Save Muny” Golf Tournaments and Concert Slated for June 7 The Save Muny Committee will hold two golf tournaments and a concert June 7, 2008 to aid efforts in saving Austin’s venerable Lions Municipal Golf Course. “Lions Muny” is part of the Brackenridge Tract that lies along Lake Austin Blvd. and is being studied for commercial and residential development by the University of Texas’ Board of Regents.
The 4-player team scramble will have a double shotgun start at 8:00 AM and 1:30 PM. Cost is
$100 per golfer.
All golf participants, their invited guests and members of the local neighborhood communities are invited to a BBQ and concert that follows featuring a line-up with some of Austin’s favorite musicians. Phil Lee and his band from Nashville will debut in Austin at the event. Proceeds from a silent auction featuring sports and music memorabilia will also benefit Save Muny.
Two-time Masters’ Champion Ben Crenshaw, a life-long Austinite who grew up playing the course, recently said, “I’m hopeful that the City of Austin and the University of Texas can work together to find a balanced use of the Brackenridge Tract, and that consideration will be given to the part of the land (Lions Muny) that has been home to a great public recreational facility for many years. It’s a valuable piece of Austin parkland and there are environmental and neighborhood concerns that need to be weighed.”
The Save Muny Committee and effort is comprised of a cross-section of people such as developer Dick Kemp and long-time neighborhood advocate Mary Arnold. The committee was formed to raise public awareness and funds, and work with neighborhood organizations, the Austin city council and the University of Texas Board of Regents to make sure Muny will always be a public place where families can go to enjoy the outdoors, and a great round of golf at affordable prices.
“This is a historical course and it’s set on 141 acres of green space near Lake Austin that we just can’t afford to lose,” says Save Muny committee co-chair Peter Barbour, who also has played Muny since childhood. “Saving Muny is the right thing to do for Austin.”
Spots in the tournament, sponsorship opportunities and invitations to the dinner and concert are now available. Donations for silent auction items are welcome.
