What Lion's Municipal has meant to me.

My golfing life started at Sears in Hancock shopping center in 1974. At the age of 10 years old my grandfather took me to get my first set of golf clubs at Sears. He did not really play golf very much but felt it was a gentlemans game that he wanted me to learn. Thanks grandpa, the last 34 years have been a blast!!

I spent my first year learning how to hit the ball and trying to understand the game. I grew up about an hour outside of Austin and would spend some of my summer's with my grandparents, who lived in Westlake. My grandmother worked at the Villa Capri hotel and during that first summer she would drop me off at Hancock so that I could play golf all day.

As the first year passed and my golf game progressed my grandmother started dropping me off at Lion's to play. She would pack my lunch and some snacks and leave me there just before 8am and pick me up after 5 pm on her way home.

Wow, what a way to spend your day as an 11 year old kid!! Those days will always be burned into my memory. I remember asking to buy 3 golf balls and a much younger Lloyd Morrison said you mean a "sleeve". A "sleeve", I thought.....I hope that dosen't extra?? I grew up in the country and when you bought your golf balls at Western Auto they did not use those type of terms.

Around the age of 13 I made my first eagle on number 12 at Lions. My second shot ended up on the rocks left of the cart path and I made a chip shot to a pin that was located in the middle of the green.

In January of 2007 I started a website austinamateurgolf.com . My site supports Austin's local Amateur golf tournaments, 3 of which are played at Lions....Muny Spring Partnership, The Firecracker and The Men's City Championship.

Lions is a very important part of Austin's golf history and a has brought many memories to golfers like myself.
